Sanctuaries

Vepric

Vepric, is a sanctuary located in Makarska and founded in 1908 by Bishop Dr Juraj Carić (1867-1921). The sanctuary consists of a natural cave and peaceful landscapes formed by hills and a creek running in the valley as well as a chapel, outside alter, a Way of the Cross, a sacristy, house for retreats and paths for processions. Veprice resembles the serene sanctuary of Lourdes in France, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.

Marija Bistrica

Considered Croatia’s National Sanctuary, Marija Bistrica is just a short trip from Zagreb. Situated in the beautiful natural surroundings and slopes of Medvednica mountain in the Krapina-Zagorje county is the parish church which has a 16th- century wooden statue of the Madonna called “Our Lady of Bistrica”. The statue is believed to have miraculous powers as it was not destroyed during later attacks by the Turks. It is the country’s largest Marian shrine, attracting some 800,000 pilgrims annually. The statue of Mary allegedly has miraculous powers.
